Avant la guerre, le programme de la formation initiale dure trois ans. Ceux qui sont diplômés sortent avec le grade de Sergeant. Ensuite, en fonction de l’ancienneté, du niveau de responsabilité et des notations lors des formations complémentaires, certains peuvent devenir officiers. Durant la guerre, les cours généraux en vigueur depuis l'époque française furent réduits pour aller plus rapidement aux spécialisations.
Beaucoup de candidats à l'entrée possèdent le baccalauréat et l'ESOT de l'AAK était la seule école du Cambodge pour ceux qui veulent travailler comme technicien aéronautique. Pour certains bacheliers ne pouvant se permettre de financer de longues études universitaires; l'ESOT offrait une oppotunité de carrière avec une rémunération dès le début des études. Par ailleurs, c'était la voie principale pour devenir Officier Mécanicien.

Before the war, the initial training lasts three years before receiving the rank of Sergeant. Later, with seniority and depending upon the level of responsibility and the level of success to advanced trainings, some became officers. During the war, theoretical lessons from the French period were reduced for more practical lessons.
Most of the candidates at the entrance to the Academy have high school diploma and the Khmer Air Force ESOT was the only school in Cambodia for those interested in aircraft technology. For some who can not afford long term university studies, the ESOT school offered an opportunity for careers with immediate incomes. Besides, it was the main way to become a Mechanical Officer in the Air Force.

Trois
ans de scolarité dont six mois d'instruction militaire. Ensuite, les
sous-officiers poursuivent les spécialisations Radio, Electicité,
Moteurs, Moteurs à réaction.... Cette instruction héritée des méthodes
françaises permit d'avoir un personnel polyvalent pour s'adapter à la
(trop) grande variété d'appareils de l'Aviation Royale; quand
il a fallu réceptionner les premiers hélicoptères UH-1, les techniciens
ont mis seulement un tiers du temps prévu par les américains pour comprendre les procédures de réglage
et de maintenance. La contre partie de cette formation était sa relativement longue durée qui ne
permettait pas de faire face aux urgences de la guerre.
Three years studies including six months of military training. After which, NCOs continue specializations: Radio, electricity, motors, jet engines.... This instruction inherited from the French methods allowed to have a multi-skilled personnel to cope with the (too many) variety of aircraft of the Royal Aviation era; for instance, KAF technicians needed only one third of the time planned by the US military to receive the first UH-1 helicopters. However, this French style education is long and was not suitable to war emergencies.

En 1970, l'instruction militaire est réduite à trois
mois et les cours passent rapidement aux spécialisations. Les élèves
complètent au fur et à mesure leur formation par des stages dans les
centres d'instruction américains comme ceux en Thailande. Les méthodes
américaines demandent en échange un plus grand nombre de personnel. Il y eut plusieurs recrutements par an.
In 1970, the military
training was reduced to three months and students went quickly toward
specializations. They completed progressively their training through
internships in U.S. training centers such as those in Thailand.
American methods requires in exchange a large number of staff. There were several recruitments per year.

La
guerre est aux portes de Phnom-Penh, de jeunes étudiants se sont
massivement portés volontaires. Plus de milles candidats furent retenus pour
passer le concours d'entrée pour les 300 places ouvertes.
The war is on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, young students have
volunteered en masse. More than one thousand candidates were accepted
to take the entrance examination for three hundred seats available.
